Bass & Stuff with Ronnie Ontiveros

Bass, everyone needs you, they just might not know it yet. Let’s talk about what we are supposed to do as bassists, where and how to put our hands, and make fun of guitarists. We will go over some bassics, some soloing, and some philosophy.

We can talk about the Nashville numbering system and some fingerboard mapping.

We will spend some time rotating bassists in a “jam” format. Get your chance to play bass for a song you don’t know, with minimal guidance, and oh yeah don’t mess up! This will be an exercise to show you how good you already are.

All levels are welcome. Maybe we will do a bass parade.

Paul Anastasio's Western Swing Explorations

Paul Anastasio and his friends will explore the world of improvisatory violin. We’ll talk about chord knowledge, the use of passing and neighboring tones, bowings, including Joe Venuti-style “too-eem” off-beat slurs, harmony styles, including Bob Wills “over and under” trio harmonizations and four and five-part big band harmony styles, syncopation and more. All instruments are welcome. We’ll start with my vintage handout “20 fiddle mistakes to avoid.” These are all mistakes I’ve made over the years. I’ll do my best to help keep you from falling into various traps.

We’ll be focusing on great Western swing tunes. We will also touch on swing standards, as Bob Wills and other Western swing bands played a bunch of them too. Bring your instruments and we’ll learn a bunch of stuff I wish I’d known forty years ago. It will be “grande foon”, as they say in Spanglish.
